Tips for Simplifying Locum Tenens Credentialing

Tips for Simplifying Locum Tenens Credentialing

The credentialing process is notoriously challenging for both healthcare providers and administrators. And while the paperwork involved is extensive for any new position, it can be even more stressful for a locum tenens job with a shorter timeline.

We work with providers and facilities to manage the credentialing process.

Here are four tips we recommend for simplifying the locum tenens credentialing process and making it as painless as possible.

Manage your expectations

Credentialing requires time and patience. In general, you can expect it to take one to three months to complete, but that timeframe may be different during the COVID-19 pandemic. For instance, some states provide an exception for in-state licensing for healthcare providers in an emergency situation – though many of these changes apply only to specific providers, locations, or conditions.

Know your documents

The documents required for credentialing will vary depending on the position, location, and facility, but standard elements include:

  • Current resume or CV
  • Diplomas and post-graduate certifications
  • Board certifications
  • Active state medical licenses
  • Life support certifications
  • Controlled substance registrations
  • Insurance documentation
  • Professional references
  • Recent procedure logs
  • Immunization records

Be meticulous

Incomplete or inaccurate paperwork can delay the credentialing process and a locum tenens placement. One missing certification or misspelled name can hold up an otherwise perfect application.

Work closely with the staffing agency

The staffing agency should act as a liaison between the healthcare provider and facility, facilitating communication, gathering documents, and ensuring that the credentialing application is complete. Partner with an agency that has an in-house credentialing department, experienced and knowledgeable staff, and efficient procedures to manage the process from start to finish.
