First-rate anesthesia providers are needed in facilities across the U.S., and it’s now easier for CRNAs and anesthesiologists to practice in multiple states.
The Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (IMLC) is an agreement that allows physicians who already hold a license in a participating state to expedite their licensing in other compact states. The IMLC, created in 2017 and governed by the Interstate Medical Licensure Commission, currently includes 34 states, the District of Columbia, and the Territory of Guam. The compact streamlines the licensing process and eliminates the need for physicians to manage multiple applications to state medical boards.
Before applying to receive licensure through the IMLC, verify that you meet the eligibility requirements, including holding a full unrestricted medical license in a compact state that will serve as the “State of Principal License” (SPL). In addition, meet standard medical education requirements, not have any disciplinary actions toward your medical license or DEA/CSR, criminal history, or be currently under investigation.
If you meet the requirements, you can apply through the IMLC for licensure in multiple participating states and receive separate licenses from each state where you will practice. You can apply online, submitting a non-refundable application fee and fingerprints for a national criminal background check. Once your application is approved, you will receive a letter of qualification and can select which state licenses you want to acquire, paying additional fees for each state. Within a few days, you will be able to obtain your new state licenses.
