Locum Tenens 101: Your Top 3 Questions Answered

If you are considering applying for your first locum tenens position, you have an exciting path ahead of you. Locum assignments offer diverse benefits, including engaging work, flexible scheduling, and travel opportunities.

Radar Healthcare recruiters hear a lot of similar questions from first-time locum providers, so we’ve rounded up the top three queries to answer for you.

1. How long are assignments?

The length of locum tenens assignments varies widely from job to job. Some last a single day, others continue for several months or many years. Every provider has different requirements and priorities, so our recruiters work with you to find positions that fit your schedule and lifestyle.

Even if you are happy in your current full-time job, you can still take on short-term locum assignments to earn extra income. For example, we offer many one- to two-week assignments, as well as PRN shifts that let you pick up a few additional days of work each month.

Flexibility is one of the main benefits of locum tenens work. Some positions don’t require overtime or being on call, allowing you to arrange a set schedule of the hours you prefer; for example, you could request a set weekday schedule to leave your weekends free.

Many locum jobs can also accommodate time off if you give sufficient notice. If you are placed in a long-term assignment and plan to take vacation, you can let your account manager know in advance so they have enough time to secure replacement coverage during your absence.

2. What income can I expect to earn?

Healthcare facilities have a high demand for locum providers right now, and rates are more competitive than ever before. Radar has a reputation for securing the best rates for our providers. Locum CRNAs earn $125-$130 on average per hour and locum anesthesiologists earn $200-$225 per hour, plus travel and lodging.

Compensation depends on the specific client and contract but earning potential for locum providers continues to grow – particularly when working with call and overtime.

3. What costs will I be responsible for as a locum tenens provider?

When you work with Radar as a locum tenens provider, we do everything possible to meet your preferences on logistics and travel arrangements. If you want us to handle all your travel plans– airfare, rental car, mileage reimbursement, lodging, and meal per diem– we will book everything and cover the expenses. You can also choose to accept a higher all-inclusive rate and be responsible for making the arrangements yourself.

As an independent contractor, you are responsible for paying for your taxes, insurance (health, dental, life, disability), and most professional fees. We always offer malpractice insurance and sometimes cover state licensing fees as well.
